Featuring an extended tap break, glittering gold costumes and massive towers designed in art deco style, the musical number “Friend Like Me” is an homage to Busby Berkeley’s 1933 classic movie musical 42nd Street. (It’s fitting, since ALADDIN on Broadway plays at the New Amsterdam Theatre on 42nd Street!)

While the animated film was in development, the character of the Genie was based on jazz greats Cab Calloway and Fats Waller. Though this concept was eventually changed for the film, it was brought back to life for the Broadway show.
